Let the Wrong One In (2021) with Dee Molumby
Irish Eyes are Smilin' this week, as Danny Boy and Hugh tackle a horror comedy from the Emerald Isle, so c'mere and listen...
Knock, knock...
This week, we welcome back Vampire Videos’ Most Prolific Guest™—Irish film critic and podcaster Dee Molumby—who returns for more craic with a movie close to her emerald heart. It’s the Irish vampoire comedy Let the Wrong One In. This discussion is proper gas! (And Dan apologises for everything.)
Listen below:
🏰 Bram Stoker’s Castle Dracula, Dublin.
Many scenes in Let the Wrong One In took advantage of having a readymade spooky castle in Dublin, with the tourist attraction Bram Stoker’s Castle. But despite having an impressive 4.7/5 score on Tripadvisor, it sadly closed a few years ago, so you’ll just have to peruse these images taken by visitors, and take these people’s word for it.
Can we start a grassroots campaign to get it reopened?
🇮🇪 Know Your Irish Slang 💬
Let the Wrong One In is more Irish than a leprechaun flying Ryanair with an in-flight meal of Lucky Charms, which means it’s full of slang, so we thought it would be fun to do a ‘5 Irish Slang Words’ and their equivalents in Scotland and England.
How many do you know? And let us know the slang from your neck of the woods…
🇮🇪: BANJAXED.
🏴: SCUNNERED.
🏴: KNACKERED.
Formal: Broken, damaged, exhausted.
🇮🇪: GAS.
🏴: PURE DEAD BRILLIANT.
🏴: CRACKING.
Formal: Funny, hilarious, entertaining.
🇮🇪: LASHING.
🏴: PISHING DOWN.
🏴: POURING DOWN.
Formal: Raining heavily.
🇮🇪: MANKY.
🏴: BOWFIN’.
🏴: MINGIN’.
Formal: Dirty, filthy, disgusting.
🇮🇪: EEJIT.
🏴: DAFTY.
🏴: BERK.
Formal: Idiot, foolish person.
And yes, Dee wasn’t lying—a “Ronnie” is indeed Dublin slang for “moustache”—and the term is derived from the facial fuzz of classic English actor Ronald Colman, who sported a recognisable croiméal on his stiff upper lip. See below:
❓Win SINNERS on Blu-ray!
Exciting times! We have a Blu-ray copy of Ryan Coogler’s incredible horror film Sinners to give away to a lucky listener of Vampire Videos.
To be in with a chance of winning it, you must be a resident of the UK or Republic of Ireland, and answer this question correctly:
Which famous real-life blues musician makes a cameo appearance in Sinners?
If you know, send your answer to us via this Google Form.
The competition closes soon, on 26 July. The winner will be decided using a random number generator of the correct entries. We’ll announce the winner that evening and contact them via e-mail. If you enter more than once you will be disqualified.
Good luck!

What would make a great accompaniment to Let the Wrong One In?
Obviously, you can do a complete 180-degree turn and watch Let the Right One In, which this film is based on—extremely loosely! But it does also have Dee on as a guest, in only the second episode we ever recorded. Had our voices broken that long ago?
Or how about The Lost Boys, which also concerns a teenager dealing with the fact his brother has been turned into a vampire?
However, continuing the more relevant comedy line, and because it gets referenced in this episode’s discussion, we instead recommend you bite into an earlier episode we recorded on Kiwi mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows:
🎨 Art Deco
Vampire Videos’ resident artist Mary-Jane McStay is back with her rendition of unfortunate Dublin vampire Deco…
🎙️ ‘Dee’ is for Dublin…
As she mentioned in this episode, Dee now hosts her very own podcast called What’s the Story, Dublin?, so if you live in Ireland’s capital city it’s essential listening for all the local information. Check it out!
(I don’t know if this podcast is where you complain if your wheelie bins haven’t been emptied yet, but perhaps don’t e-mail Dee to find out.)
